What Is CJ? is an artistic research project that emerged during my Erasmus exchange at the ABK Stuttgart, beginning with a naïve curiosity about the mysterious and paradoxical world of contemporary art.
The project takes artist and professor Christian Jankowski, who was largely absent during my stay, as its point of departure. Taking advantage of my ambiguous position as a temporary student, I began investigating this absence through interviews, undercover strategies, and a detective role-play conducted within the institution itself.
What initially seemed to be an investigation into a person gradually became an investigation into the conditions through which artistic meaning is produced. Through rumours, expectations, misunderstandings, and institutional narratives, the project examines how contemporary art is constructed and sustained through discourse, fiction, and institutional structures.
I then reduced Christian Jankowski’s name to the initials CJ, transforming them into an open signifier. With the help of ChatGPT, each “CJ” becomes the starting point for a new piece of writing, developed through different media and narrative forms.
